What Players Are Saying

Linda and Gary

We had a great time learning the mechanic, strategy and athletic pillars! You two are very patient, friendly and above all very learned in the sport of pickleball

Vicky S.

Thanks again for all the Pickleball information that you and CJ provide. It is worth its weight in gold.....🙂

Sudie A.

I just got off the courts and had some nice shots and vigorous rallies. Implementing the strategy of running right to the NVZ line has helped me most of all. Such a simple concept, too!

Thanks to Tony, CJ and this entire group I ended up with a silver in mixed doubles 3.5 60-64 (at the US Open). I can say that what I’ve learned here changed the way I play and how to honor the game itself.

One of my goals is to improve my third shot drop. I went back to the third shot drop diagnostic videos, and I went out to practice. It clicked, and after 15 minutes, I was putting 80% + of my shots in the NVZ with the correct trajectory to easily clear the net. Count me in as a System advocate.

The System is a great learning tool for me as I am a visual learner. I especially love the use of the whiteboards and the movement of the magnets.

This may seem small to you two BUT ... I am no longer afraid to play anyone, anywhere, at anytime. You two are AMAZING!!!!!

A player only has to focus on the first two shots (of the 4) they make. I began to think of two separate games. Serve and Return. Each has two shots a person has to think about to get past the1st four. Server hits 1 & 3, Returner hits 2 & 4. IDK why I never made it that simple in my mind.

I am reviewing today, looking at the notes-regarding Tip #3 ” When I am on the Serve Side-I want to make it up to the NVZ line under control”. Tony mentions-“learn to control movement”. I do not completely understand “learn to control movement”. I am a beginner and I hope this concept will be discussed more in the next workshops.

Thank you and appreciate the advice of adding the tips–“one at a time”.

    • Avatar photo CJ Johnson on March 18, 2023 at 2:23 pm

Hi Carolann, welcome to pickleball! Movement control refers to foundation and footwork. We cover these concepts in great detail in the System, but unfortunately, there isn’t enough time to go into detail in the miniseries. But since you asked here’s a tip to get you started, make sure you aren’t running when you hit a shot. Stop and then make a stroke.

      • Avatar photo Carolann on March 18, 2023 at 2:56 pm

😎 Thanks for the tip! Sometimes I don’t stop.

  9. Avatar photo Eric on March 20, 2023 at 7:07 am

Could there be more explanation of the strategy of the server to the NVZ?

    • Avatar photo CJ Johnson on March 20, 2023 at 9:43 am

Hi Eric, in the Miniseries we focus on providing players framework and objectives to help them see results the fastest. We also look at the return side as a building block, in order to win more games players need to first stop losing them. The objective for the serve side has a much larger number of variables than the return side. It’s also much more difficult to learn. We see most players including solid 4.5 and even pro players whose games would improve by plugging the holes in their return side first, which is why we focus on this first. In the miniseries we only have time to cover so many topics, we talk about the serve side in greater detail inside the Pickleball System.
